Tucked away in a Waikiki boutique hotel, Heavenly is quickly becoming one of my favorite brunch spots.
Its motto is “Local first, organic whenever possible,” a mantra I fully support.
So after a productive shopping trip to H&M this past Sunday, I suggested we refuel at Heavenly.
We started off with a round of smoothies. I opted for Sunny (“anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and clears infections”) with organic carrot, ginger, orange, banana, and turmeric.
Sadly, I’ve come to the realization that I don’t care for the taste of turmeric. I wound up taking the rest to go, and added some leftover mango lassi to mask the strong flavor.
For my entree, I ordered a Portuguese sausage omelette, which arrived in a cast iron skillet with a handful of ‘Nalo greens, mushrooms, avocado, tomato, and Okinawan sweet potato, almost all of which were locally sourced. The accompanying kale pesto was perfect for drizzling and dipping. Simple, delicious, and not at all greasy.
My favorite dish, however, was not my own.
My friend ordered the organic veggie and beans loco moco with Hawaii Island Kulana beef, local eggs, local ginger soy glaze, 10-grain rice, local farm green beans, broccoli, organic carrot, organic lentils and organic black beans.
I seriously could not stop eating it. The sauce was light and flavorful, and the rice blend added surprisingly addictive texture.
Fortunately, my understanding, generous dining companion didn’t mind me reaching over every few minutes. (I know, so rude.)
Brunch wasn’t cheap, but we left happy, energized, and satisfied with our meal.
Too bad Waikiki’s infamous lack of parking prevents me from visiting this place more often. A fortuitous open space up the block made Sunday’s venture possible.
Heavenly is located in Shoreline Hotel Waikiki at 342 Seaside Avenue. [website]
